By the way, regardless of all that the point is -this a great song, Spirit was very talented!!
By: JimmyPageZoSo56. on 10 Aug 07, 06:27:51
Page did lift the intro but made changes to it so it doesn't sound like it
By: lickss. on 09 Aug 07, 21:00:10
I started researching this whole zep thing today. Im 46 and grew up in the seventies. We all did and still do love Zep.I am a guitarist, studied classical guitar in high school and play mostly rock electric today. I cant believe all anyone hears is stairway in this song(taurus)rain song is in there and the intro is almost note for note-into the light, all threezep songs came out after "taurus". Its a great example of how even the best sometimes borrow, long live rock!!

hey! willy dixon rules
By: gyneman. on 03 Jul 07, 02:05:31
Not so sure you understand. The fact that music is never really created, it's continually being resurfaced and re imagined. The fact that the whole song isn't a total replica isn't whats being discussed here. It's the origins from whence they came, that is the topic.
By: stockjonebills. on 01 Jul 07, 12:31:23
The intro is similiar but not an exact copy. Thats it. The rest of this song sounds like a rip of the Moody Blues
By: cameronburge. on 30 Jun 07, 09:41:26
Stairway to Heaven is lot more then the opening minute. What about the other 6 feakin' minutes of the song??? Did Jimmy's solo come from this song? Did Bonzo's drumming? Geesh!!!!!
By: cameronburge. on 30 Jun 07, 09:38:23
Case in point...Whole Lotta Love is a GAZILLION times better than Willy Dixon's You Need Love. You Need Love is, quite frankly.............pants. Whole Lotta Love is an all time rock classic.
By: gyneman. on 28 Jun 07, 14:58:36
You have only seen the tip of the iceberg my friend! Many, many Zepp songs are "borrowed" from other great songs or obscure songs. But each one is meant to pay tribute or homage to some of the greatest bluesmen ever to play the blues. Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson seem to be more prolific than others but, I can think of many others just the same!
By: stever1957. on 28 Jun 07, 07:36:16
For the record, Jimmy Page has never made any particular secret of the fact that he borrowed from this piece when writing Stairway To Heaven. It's no big deal - classical composers did it all the time.
By: JonEK9. on 27 Jun 07, 23:42:31
ya you hear "similiarities" lol but then you can hear similarities in a million songs. Stariway i the greatest rock song ever penned, this is not even close
By: MGHZINC. on 27 Jun 07, 16:53:07
Go to Classic Rock Central and see what else Led Zepplin ripped off
By: MGHZINC. on 27 Jun 07, 16:48:47
Did they "borrow" Babe I'm gonna leave you from Joan Baez too? And Dazed and Confused from Jake Holmes? Look it up...
By: peppar112. on 24 Jun 07, 23:53:33
just the ending is a song itself
By: peppar112. on 24 Jun 07, 23:51:50
The acoustic intro was borrowed from the song "Taurus" from the band Spirit, who toured with Led Zeppelin when they first played the US. The band Spirit has acknowledged this, and is okay with it. (thanks, Conrad - Los Angeles, CA) its from a website called songfacts, btw i dont remember the song from the intro i remember the song for its Guitar solo and ending thats the best guitar solo and ending ever
By: cocoabean. on 24 Jun 07, 02:06:07
if you cant hear the similarity you're deaf
By: kkwacko. on 19 Jun 07, 22:20:46
the gitarplayer of led zeppelin acctually loved this so they made stairway to heaven
By: oceansofwine. on 18 Jun 07, 00:24:35
Well it is definitely similar to Stairway. And the fact the 2 bands toured together I think It's a little more than a coincidence that the exact same chords are used! Stairway is still my fav song ever though!
By: CommanderPaul1. on 16 Jun 07, 05:11:51
lmao wow some ppl r dum :) not even close to stairway! jeez
By: gyneman. on 11 Jun 07, 02:10:12
You bet BAMAMARV! Right off the top of my head I can think of ten song that Zepp either copied, reworked, or just plagiarized! But that doesn't stop me from enjoying one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever assembled. Although it might make some ppl mad to learn the truth. It just makes me search out the origins of songs and give the creators their due!
By: BAMAMARV. on 08 Jun 07, 19:15:23
You can take the feel & use different chords, sequences/changes, a different key & instrumentation & maybe even a small part note-for-note if it's not the unique ID of the song without it being a blatant ripoff, as MANY songs are anyway --- every power-pop band in the world owes royalties to Buddy Holly & The Beatles. But this is a "211 in progress" forever, a total ripoff by Led Zep - they're long-time admitted & adjudged thieves more than once, way worse than Steely Dan ever was.
By: BAMAMARV. on 08 Jun 07, 19:13:05
A few notes can be a "tribute to" a song or can be a blatant ripoff, depending on how much you depend on them. The most recognizable part of "Stairway To Heaven" are those 1st 5 chords ripped from "Taurus". Remove them and Zep doesn't have much of a song left, at least not the one we all know and love, as the intro & many parts of the verses are either that exact change or key off that Am to Fmaj7 change - it's not just the intro, folks - come on.
By: AndrewLargemanJones. on 08 Jun 07, 06:55:09
The first five chords to Stairway are almost (if not) identical to the chords in this song, and it isn't a generic chord sequence like the I IV V or something. Now I'm not trying to diss Stairway or anything, but it can't be denied that it is derivative of this piece, unless it was like a subconscious accident or a complete coincidence (the latter being unlikely). I still think Stairway is a great song, as did Randy, but I'm not going to deny the similarities.
