If a person can look into your eyes and tell exactly what you're thinking, then it wouldn't just be body cues (unless they're blinking in morse code). There'd have to be a way to figure out what can be gleaned by body language and what can't. For example, if I was thinking of a random name, I don't think someone could tell what it was on the first guess just based on my body language! Of course, most psychics wouldn't even try to rise to a challenge like that.

If it turns out the psychic can only work from picking up body cues, then there isn't any real ESP (literally "extra"sensory perception), and it can be explained away by said sensory cues. Hopefully by removing the confounding variable, we'll be able to find out if such normal things are causing these variables, or if there actually are psychic powers that don't fit into the laws of physics as we currently understand them.

Indeed. Just to play devil's advocate, though, what if removing the "confounding variable" is actually interfering with the "powers?" For example, some people claim they can read minds but have to look others in the eye or hold their hand or something. In this case it'd be a lot harder to find out if they're psychic or just good at picking up on subconscious cues (or if there's actually a difference between the two).

Very true, hence why I stated that these professional psychics are frauds using cold reading techniques. However, in laboratory experiments, people who already had prior belief in psychic abilities, did demonstrate statistically significant levels, and, based on Rosenthal's work there does seem to be some body language based communication between experimenters and subjects, thus a subject's belief can be pushed toward sheep or goat based on the prior expectation of the experimenter.

I always have speed issues because I'm on WiFi, two floors down from my router. But this time it was taking amazingly long compared to other videos I was watching just before and just after. I think I'll blame it on Vista. I switched over to my Mac and it loaded with no problem. I think Vista has serious WiFi issues. Things take forever and my connection breaks all the time. This never happens on my Mac.

He has a point about PhDs being SOMETIMES awarded without much consideration for quality and scientific truth. He also has a (minor) point about the public's erroneous idea of a PhD infallibility. The main point he missed however, is that most PhDs are actually knowledgeable and down to earth at the same time, without thinking of themselves as demi-gods..

Secondly, I have a Master's degree and am working towards my PhD and I have never felt condescended to by Randi. I've never heard him claim to be some great philosopher of science. He's a magician who has a great appreciation for the methods of science and understands human fallibility. If you knew anything about Randi you would know that he has the ultimate respect for science and those that dedicate their life to it.
