Just thinking of the times, people passed down the story of Jesus by oral tradition for a number of reasons. One, it was easier than to write it down. Two, the Romans and Jews crucified Jesus for a reason, and it wouldn't be the smartest thing to keep texts about a religion that you could be punished for around your hovel. Finally, if religions were facts, they wouldn't be religions. It's called faith for a reason. Jesus never did anything but teach people to love each other, so have fun.
